Durex had a perception problem. They had innovative products, but weren’t considered cool. So we decided to channel this innovative spirit into something fun. The result was a world first at the time and though it’s aged a little I’m still really proud of the campaign. It was a brilliant collaboration between many talented people and won big at every major international award show, including being named the AdNews digital campaign of the year.

I’m a big believer in trying to create work that makes it on the news and onto newsfeeds. Getting Shaz & Kim together sent the internet into meltdown, became headline news, was overwhelmingly loved by the public and became a legit part of culture. A massive career highlight and something I’m really proud of.

We had the opportunity to pitch on one of Australia’s most iconic brands, Weet-Bix. Having spent decades advertising via sport stars, they needed to connect with today’s kids. A generation filled with all manner of weird and wonderful ambitions which need fuelling.

For decades, New Zealand has used natural beauty to market itself to tourists globally. But as other countries also began promoting themselves in this same way, NZ lost some of its uniqueness. So we developed a strategy to evolve the brand platform and showcase beautiful landscapes through the uniquely warm, generous and welcoming people who live there.

As the first country to see the sunrise each day, we gave New Zealanders the official role of greeting the world every single morning for a year. A gesture that demonstrated the warmth of the people whilst showcasing 365 different landscapes, activities and destinations.

In Australia the campaign saw a +26% awareness uplift and 3-year consideration targets were met after just 6 months. It has since been awarded a global Effie as the most effective campaign in the world 2019/20, and is Tourism New Zealand’s best performing campaign ever.

We relaunched the McCafe brand in Australia, with a new brand platform celebrating our national obsession with quality coffee. It was a massive commercial success - 1 in 4 coffees sold in Australia during the campaign were from McCafe. Seriously. I find that stat incredibly hard to believe but it has been verified. A great collaboration between the team at DDB and McCafe.

Winter can get a bad rap, but our idea was to get Macca’s to celebrate it as time to enjoy delicious food and moments with friends and family.

Red Bull wanted to speak to runners. So we created a marathon event made from runner’s data. One where only uphill metres run count. It ended up becoming the first ever idea from Australia to be picked up by Red Bull globally as an annual event.

A truly integrated idea - part brand gesture, part profit generator. All part of repositioning McCafe to quality obsessed Australian coffee drinkers.

The McChicken has spent its entire life being overshadowed by its more famous siblings - the Big Mac and the Cheeseburger. Sound familiar, middle kids? We used this insight to shine the spotlight on the McChicken for the first time, resulting in a sales spike and renewed love for a Macca’s classic.

We launched the campaign with a Tweet asking Australia to vote for their favourite Macca’s burger - and we ‘accidentally’ forgot to include the McChicken in the list of voting options. A storm of outrage was generated and the next day we unveiled an apology in the form of our ‘ode to the middle children’ campaign and promo.

Aussies have grown weary of the endless brand gags on April fools. So instead of fooling them, we thought we would try our hand at making them April Fool-Proof. In a very tongue-in-cheek manner, we used the brain boosting, rich in Omega 3 Fillet-O-Fish to help Aussies keep their wits about them and avoid being fooled. On the day we had a team monitor social platforms and when another brand posted a gag, we would politely interject and offer anyone that was tricked a free Fillet-O-Fish to stay April Fool Proof for the rest of the day.

I was creative director on Kayo, a fairly new sport streaming service. Here’s some of my favourite bits of work we made together.

We were given a tricky brief: create a national campaign for the upcoming T20 Big Bash League, aimed at young teens, showcasing all 8 teams equally, using only last year’s highlights footage. We decided the non-stop action, colour and excitement of the BBL made it the closest thing to a real-life video game. So our idea was to prove it; by finding a parallel between every element of the BBL world and the video game world. Then we challenged Aussies to see if they could handle it, asking ‘Who’s Game?’

Macca’s brings ingredients and flavours together better than anyone else. They also bring together people - especially over summer, where a mid-roadtrip Macca’s pit-stop is a rite of passage Down Under. So we created a campaign celebrating just that.

‘Together & lovin’ it’ became a timely reminder of the joy and happiness that comes with being together with friends, family and those we love.

To spread the lovin' on Valentine's Day in Australia, we created a special heart-shaped McNugget box designed to be gifted and shared. And we did it at scale. It replaced the regular box at every store in the country, which led to thousands of photos, Tweets and user generated video content featuring it on TikTok and beyond. It was covered in national newspapers and radio, as well as with paid support on social where we reminded all budding Romeo's that even if they left their gifting to the last minute, we had their back.

Having held a monopoly over the Australian rideshare market for years, Uber were suddenly faced with an influx of copycat competitors who were aggressively undercutting them. Rather than get into a tit-for-tat price war, we decided to lean in on something these new smaller players couldn’t compete on: reliably knowing that when you book a ride, it’s gonna show up in a couple minutes and you won’t be left stranded.

The idea was to own a beautifully simple, everyday articulation of this - the phrase ‘see you soon’. A little promise we all make unknowingly, but one that’s important when every minute counts. Three words said every day by people of all ages, life stages or situations. We knew this was a powerful sentiment that perfectly expressed how people feel about the reliability of the Uber app.

Uber had reached a tipping point where all the early adopters were on board and it was time to go mainstream. So we came up with an idea of using data to make it feel like everyone’s doing it (and if you’re not, you’re missing out). The advertising equivalent of FOMO. We shot the brand’s first Australian tv ad to try and get everyday Aussie’s to give it a whirl. Since the lure of free mints and water weren’t enough to convince our audience, we figured a David Bowie classic might get them over the line.

RM Williams have a strange duality. They're a no-nonsense blue collar classic and a luxury high-end label; a Jacko & Hyde brand, if you might. They're one of the only things stockbrokers and stockmen can agree upon. So that became the inspiration for the Craftsman boot campaign. A no-nonsense tone celebrating those who dedicate themselves to their craft.

'A Life's Work' was a great platform we inherited from the team at Special Group and brought to life with print and outdoor.

As official sponsor of the 2019 State of Origin series, Carlton Dry wanted to engage footy fans in an interesting way. So we created an idea that turned all the pre-match banter between opposition fans into legally binding contracts - whose outcomes were decided by the footy game itself.

To celebrate Macca's 50th birthday in Australia we handed over the keys to our iconic jingle for the first time ever. We asked 6 TikTok creators to remix the jingle, without any rules, and release them as videos on TikTok.

Macca’s were key sponsors of the AFL and NRL. Which worked out well given I am truly obsessed with sport. Here’s a collection of some of the spots we made together.

We started playing a game to get through long, boring meetings. Every time we heard someone drop a wanky buzzword we’d jot it down and began to curate a list of them all (see?). We started off calling it TED Talk Tourettes, but pivoted to simply calling it what it really is: corporate wank. Check out the bespoke website here

Carlton Dry gets knocked for being a pretty simple sort of beer. There isn’t some amazing ingredient backstory. No craft attributes. Nothing complex about it from a taste profile. So we decided to turn that criticism on its head and actually introduce the notion of ‘uncomplicated’ as a new piece of beer terminology. A descriptor for easy drinking, smooth lagers. Turning its perceived weakness into its strength. Because after all, in the bizarre world we live in, uncomplicated is something we could all do with a bit more of. So the idea was to give our beer a voice, literally, to help point out that the best way to be.

Virgin Mobile wanted to make their loyal customers feel loved. So we created a celebration of the day each loyal customer first joined – their ‘Virgin Mobile Birthday’.

Loyal customers were sent an email on their sign-up anniversary containing a personalised video celebration of their Virgin Mobile birthday. It featured five personalisation points transforming it into an ode to them and even triggered a real SMS message sent to their phone that coincided with the footage in the video.

Every January, Aussie Home Loans email their 300,000+ past customers in an effort to get back on their radar. Rather than creating a click-to-win style promo they’d tried in previous years, we tapped into the emotion surrounding the family home. We took customers on a trip down memory lane, reminding them of the true value of Aussie’s services.

I was at an awards night and started a game our table could play where we all bet on which campaigns would win in each category. One thing led to another and we turned that very game into an app.

In the world of ride sharing, nothing matters more than speed of pick up. So we took Uber’s API and fed their real time data into hundreds of outdoor sites across Australia - showing the real pick up times from that exact spot. A simple but powerful demo that turned a whole heap of digital billboards into functional app screens.

We were briefed on making Harris Farm’s meat section ‘more market than supermarket’. So we created a new brand where, just like their meat, everything is done the old-fashioned, quality, proper way.

Our idea was to position Harris Farm Market as more of a market than a supermarket - where the brand stood for not just good food, but the cumulative goodness it did for farmers, the environment, local communities and customer’s hip-pockets.

For The Greater Goodness is a long-term platform and tagline which unifies all facets of their business under one simple purpose.

It is brought to life with a unique visual style that pays homage to their lo-fi, hand-painted, market heritage.

McDonald’s had a popular retail promotion ‘30 days, 30 deals’. The line on the TV campaign was ‘Distractingly good deals’. So when it came to breathing new life into the campaign via social, we put our retail offers inside the distracting content people were already watching.

We were asked to put a square peg in a round hole and use Google’s sponsorship of the Sydney Sixers cricket team to showcase their new music streaming service ‘Google Play Music’. In a nutshell, Google Play gives you access to millions of songs, so we decided to showcase this feature in a cricket-meets-tech kinda way.

We created a cricket net that measures your bowling speed and pairs it with a Google Play track – a 120 km/h ball triggers a 120 beats per minute track.

It was a massive hit at the stadium, even a few of the players came down to give it a go. Google loved it so much they’re retaining the technology and will use it for future activations. And, importantly, I proved I could bowl faster than anyone else at M&C Saatchi.

As CD on Macca’s I was keen to re-set the tone and look of their food spots. Tonally I wanted more of a playful, Aussie feel. Visually I was keen to get up close and personal, maybe even introduce a few more dynamic camera angles. Here’s a random selection of some of our spots (multiple copywriters across each). Helped set new records for McDonald’s burger sales.

For two years I had the honour and privilege of being chosen as the AWARD School national co-head, alongside the incredible Mandie van der Merwe. It’s considered one of the world’s best creative ideas courses and is the Australian advertising industry’s premier course. Mandie and I had to navigate the course throughout COVID, resulting in us remodelling the course and taking a lot of it online for the first time. Nurturing and inspiring the next generation of creative talent was/is something I really love. I got a lot out of my time as co-head, personally and professionally.
